AMI Accreditation
The name Montessori is not trademarked. Any school or daycare can claim to offer an authentic Montessori education. So, how do you know if you are choosing a true Montessori school? Look for schools accredited by AMI.
AMI, Association Montessori Internationale, was founded by Dr. Montessori in 1929 to uphold the principles of the educational method she developed. The group maintains the standards of teacher training and offers conferences, approves the production of Montessori materials and through AMI-USA, a branch office, approves accreditation of schools.
To be accredited by AMI-USA, each classroom must have
• A Directress who holds an AMI diploma at the appropriate level
• A 3 year age span of children
• A daily schedule which allows for a 3 hour uninterrupted work cycle
• A full set of AMI approved Montessori Materials
Every three years, a consultation is performed at each level by a trained consultant to assure these requirements are met and to offer suggestions as to further refine the program.
